Be Aware Of Online Threats

Recent LOCKER ROOMS incident shined a light on the issue and spurred a global discussion about online harassment or CYBER BULLY. Why s this such a serious issue? Because the internet has evolved into a tool to abuse and has become a weapon criminals. Cyber bullying,harassment and hoaxes have been linked to teen depression, deflated self-worth and vicissitude of suicide (CYBERBULLICIDE).

COMMON METHODS OF ONLINE BULLY

1.  Bombing vulgar texts from a bot account just to limit user's access to their device, as large no. of messages sent in a short period of time can typically render a person's account unusable . This is an effective way for a harasser to threaten you.
2. Sextortion- sending consensual, intimate images or videos to their target for the purpose of molestation or online shaming.
3. Hacking- getting an unauthorized intrusion into your device with the intention to attack ,harm or intimidate you.
4. Cyberstalking- comprising no. of harassing behaviour that usually cause a target to suffer humiliation,extreme emotional distress or anxiety.

According to a 2018 PEW RESEARCH STUDY (USA) : 

• 59% of teens have experienced online sexual harassment . 
• only 28% of teens report being bullied.

According to THE NATIONAL CENTER for HEALTH STATISTICS --

• Cyberbully is the second leading cause for suicide among the age groups of 10-24.

"Bois Locker Room" is an Instagram group ,with hundreds of teenage boys from south Delhi, was allegedly used for sharing photos of underage girls, objectifying them, and promoting rape culture.The group chat is one of the most sinister manifestations of misogyny and this is how toxic masculinity starts young. But the story get twisted when a similar Instagram of girls was revealed "Girls Locker Room". This latter chat group features equally disgusting messages that objectify and sexualize boys. 

Let’s be clear about one thing: What the girls have done in this girls locker room is absolutely wrong. There is no excuse for it.

Nothing justifies treating another human being as a sex object, or homophobia or shaming someone. The point is not to play “who is the worse offender?” but to get to the root of the problem –the rape culture that sustains and fuels such toxicity, and which harms EVERYONE.

BUT do you ever think of what leads these teenagers to indulge in such heinous crimes?What can be solution to this?

 

Psychologists stress the need for open and constructive conversations on sex and sexuality at home for teenagers to understand banter from abuse.

There are multiple UGLY episodes — the Bois Locker Room, a 17-year-old  ending his life in Gurugram, and the Girls Locker Room. Though we may feel they are all different, what comes out is that there is a complete lack of sex education, gender sensitisation and sensitivity among teenagers.

Are you still thinking that these teens from the Locker Rooms should be held accountable? According to me , NO!! Kids learns what they see in their family or surrounding.They learn what they listen from parents using these kinds of words casually. Teenagers are today's daredevils unaware of real world's dare. Parents can't STOP them but they can GUIDE them.So, parents should be held liable.

What I observe in this EPISODE is lack of social media education. Restricting the use of social media is not an option. We have to inculcate a sense of responsibility among teens when using social media. There is a need to develop some rules for the CYBER WORLD of kids .

 

CYBER LITERACY FOR CYBER SECURITY

CYBER SECURITY IS IMPORTANT-:

1.  To prevent breaches and attacks.
2. To make technological defences more robust.
3. To behave in a socially responsible manner.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT ?:

Understanding the cyber threats and opportunities is critical for our generation. This is you can when you get bullied:

SAY NO TO CYBER BULLY

• Don't tackle hate with hate because it just help spreading them. 
• Don't respond to a bully , it is a good idea to save evidences.
• Don't Tolerate,Be Courageous and report it to a CYBER CELL.
• Don't delete anything because it can help you prove your case.

People love to click on DIRT no matter whether it's true or not. And this leads to rapid rise of cyber bully. THIS ISSUE IS NOT ABOUT ADVANCEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY OR COMPUTERS IT'S ABOUT NASTY BEHAVIOUR , CLOSED MINDSET AND LACK OF EDUCATION. 

We are society and when we change our attitude towards CYBER BULLY and take it seriously and responsibly ,our country will enjoy the FREEDOM OF CYBER LITERACY
